Before you read any chart, check what the quoted figure actually represents: the dollar value of one whole bitcoin on a particular trading venue at a particular moment. That sounds trivial, but it is the key to reading the BTC/USD pair correctly. The quote is not a fixed property of bitcoin itself; it is the price at which buyers and sellers are meeting on that venue at that moment.
Bitcoin is the first decentralized cryptocurrency. Its origins trace to a free-market ideology, and it appeared in 2009 when someone using the name Satoshi Nakamoto released a founding document describing the design. No central issuer sets its value, so the dollar rate emerges from trading activity rather than from an official fixing.
Because each venue keeps its own order book, the rate you see depends on where you look and when. Two platforms can show slightly different figures at the same instant, and a single platform's figure changes from minute to minute as orders fill. Treat any single number as a snapshot, not a universal truth.
Converting an amount by hand is straightforward. To find the dollar value of a quantity of bitcoin, multiply that quantity by the quoted dollar rate. To go the other way, divide a dollar amount by the rate to get the corresponding amount of bitcoin. This page offers no converter and prints no rate of its own. The chart shown here displays the live quote, so use it as your reference point and apply the arithmetic yourself.
