Bitcoin trades around the clock, every day of the week, so the dollar price of one coin is always moving. The naira does not follow the same schedule: the dollar-to-naira rate is quoted during banking hours and settles on a different rhythm. Because the naira value of a bitcoin is the product of two separate prices, anyone reading a naira figure needs to know when each of the two inputs was last updated.

The method is simple to describe. Take the price of a single bitcoin in US dollars, as shown on the first chart. Take the dollar-to-naira rate, as shown on the second chart. Multiply the first by the second, and the result is the naira value of one bitcoin. Nothing else enters the calculation, yet the answer shifts whenever either chart moves, which is why a figure seen in the morning can look stale by the afternoon.

The Central Bank of Nigeria publishes official exchange rates, and a link to that publication appears below the text on this page. Those published rates are the reference point for the dollar side of the multiplication. A platform quoting a naira price for bitcoin may arrive at a different number, and there are ordinary reasons for that: the moment each price was captured, the source used for the dollar rate, and the spread a venue applies around its own quote. Small timing gaps between two live feeds can widen into a visible difference once the two are multiplied.

Bitcoin itself is the first decentralized cryptocurrency. Rooted in a free-market ideology, it dates to 2009, when a pseudonymous author released the document that introduced it. This page is assembled automatically from public data: it carries two charts and an explanation, and it neither performs conversions nor states a rate of its own. Readers who need a precise figure should multiply the two published prices themselves and note the timestamp of each.
